Regional businesses targeting work opportunities at Rio Tinto’s $2.6 billion bauxite mine expansion on Cape York can tap into vital information at far northern forums in early February.

Aurukun Shire Council will host a two-day workshop to drive economic development in that community, while the Cairns Chamber of Commerce will co-host a project opportunities session in Cairns.

The Amrun project, formerly known as South of Embley, involves construction of a bauxite mine and associated processing and port facilities.

Cairns construction briefing

The Cairns information session on February 8 is being flagged as an opportunity to understand the construction process, supply opportunities and how to register expressions of interest.

Bechtel has been appointed as the project Engineering, Procurement and Construction Manager (EPCM) for Amrun.

Speakers at the Cairns forum are set to include Rio Tinto general manager Amrun development Greg Rashford and manager for project procurement and contracts Alex Nicolini as well as Bechtel commercial manager James Jacobson and ICN procurement engineering specialist Jason Manttan.

The event will be held at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 5pm to 7pm. More details at

Aurukun opportunities

Aurukun Shire Council said Rio Tinto representatives would visit Aurukun on February 9 to talk about the Amrun project.

The council will hold a concurrent business opportunities workshop over two days (8-9 February) to allow prospective businesses and suppliers to assess economic opportunities in Aurukun and meet with senior representatives from Rio Tinto.

“These workshops are a great chance for businesses to come together to find out more about some of the exciting opportunities that lie ahead in Aurukun,” Mayor Dereck Walpo said.

“Although the major purpose of Rio Tinto’s visit to Aurukun is to assess local supplier and employment capability, they will also speak on general business opportunities in regards to the Amrun project overall.”

The workshop will include introduction/networking and information sessions with workshop participants, a short town tour of Aurukun’s facilities, and a project briefing and meet and greet with Rio Tinto representatives.

Suppliers of goods and services to the Amrun project and residents and organisations in Aurukun are invited to attend, including:
• Local residents and organisations interested in business/employment prospects
• Mechanical services
• Road construction services
• Building and construction services
• Machinery sales and service
• Training providers
• Food and beverage suppliers
• Tourism entrepreneurs
• Arts industry
