Managing Mental Health and Wellbeing in a Disaster (RIN)

October 29, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

| Free

Guest speaker at the seminar will be Aurecon’s Technical Director, Ground Engineering, Dr Jan Kupec, who is based in Christchurch, New Zealand. In his presentation, Jan will highlight how  the Christchurch community (including Aurecon staff) have handled the trauma of their major earthquake and the impact it has had on transforming a buoyant economy into one where unanticipated difficulties need to be managed.

Jan has had key roles in supporting teams through the rebuild time in terms of the physical, emotional and psychological stresses, as well as his own ability to handle the search and rescue perspective and post the earthquake advice.

Jan is currently part time seconded to CERA, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority as the Chief Geotechnical Engineer. He also advises the Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) on the geotechnical constraints rebuilding the city centre. At Aurecon, he provides expertise on national and international projects in an advisory, technical and project management capacity.

Jan has been intimately involved in the Christchurch earthquake recovery. He is a contracted engineering specialist to the New Zealand Fire Service Urban Search and Rescue heavy rescue team. He specialises on slope stability and the effects on building structures. He also lost his own house in the September 2010 earthquake.
