There’re hails all around for the announcement of a defence cooperation agreement with Singapore that will see more than two billion dollars spent on two training areas in Queensland.

The Shoalwater Bay Training Area near Rockhampton and the Townsville Field training Area will share in the investment that will see up to 14,000 Singaporean military personnel participating in training in Australia each year.

Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones has welcomed this morning’s announcement saying it will bring Singapore and Australia closer as defence partners and generate significant local economic activity in Queensland.

Mr Jones’ office believed the money would be spent on infrastructure but could not confirm if it included living costs including catering, laundry and transportation.

Mr Jones said this massive defence spend in the city would boost confidence, generate economic activity and create jobs and was proud to be a part of a Government so serious about developing northern Australia and with a clear commitment to Townsville and the region.

“This is a very big signal stating the obvious; the Defence White Paper wants our city to build capacity and capability in our region. We have a plan for the North, a plan for Defence, and a plan for Townsville. They are all interwoven,” Mr Jones said.

“Importantly, this arrangement will require infrastructure to support it. Defence recognises that local contractors should be given every opportunity to participate in this construction work.

“This is a real win for our local contractors and proof that my Tenders for Townsville campaign is being listened to and acted on by the Turnbull Government.”

Mr Jones expressed his great admiration and thanks to the Special Envoy for Trade and former Trade Minister Andrew Robb for his tireless work negotiating and finalising this landmark agreement.

“Andrew Robb has always had the best interests of North Queensland in mind and this partnership will deliver real benefit to our city. He believes in the great potential our region has and I thank him,” Mr Jones said
