Labor confirms copper smelter promise

Posted February 27, 2015

Efforts to keep the Mount Isa mines’ copper smelter open until 2020 will be supported by the new Labor government.

The government announced it would back the operation to ensure job security for the region, minister for environment Dr Steven Miles told The North West Star.

The mine is expected to apply for an extension beyond 2016.

“The company has recently lodged an application in relation to the environmental approval required for its proposed new Black Rock open cut pit project, which would provide source material to enable copper smelting operations to continue in Mount Isa to 2020,” Dr Miles said.

The State Government aims to work with the mines through any issues that may arise throughout the approval process.
