Glencore is reducing zinc production from its mines in northern Australia by around 380,000t.

An announcement this morning confirms its operation at Lady Loretta around 100km north of Mount Isa has been suspended. Workers met this morning and were advised that voluntary redundancies would be offered.

There are more than 200 positions at Lady Loretta. Only around a dozen are locally employed. The majority are fly in and out of Townsville and Cairns.

It is unknown how many are slated for redundancy at the George Fisher operation.

Glencore is also reducing production at the McArthur River Mine in the Northern Territory.

The McArthur River Mine is one of the world’s largest zinc, lead and silver mines, situated about 70 kilometres southwest of Borroloola, near the Gulf of Carpentaria in the northeastern Northern Territory.
