Northern Development front and centre in Turnbull ministry

Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles today welcomed the emphasis on Northern Australian development in the new Ministerial arrangements announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Giles said the appointment of Josh Frydenburg to the portfolio of Resources, Energy and Northern Development sent a strong message that the Coalition was serious about developing the north.

“Lots of good work has been done and the recent White Paper delivered by the former Prime Minister Tony Abbott was a step in the right direction towards seeing Northern Australia reach its full potential as the future of the nation’s economic activity in the years to come,” Mr Giles said.

“The appointment of Mr Frydenburg means there is a dedicated and strong voice in Cabinet advocating for Northern Australia.

“I will be inviting Mr Frydenburg to the Territory at his earliest convenience so he can inspect firsthand the range of development opportunities that exist in Northern Australia.

“I’m confident that the development of the north will continue to be at the forefront of policy development under the leadership of Mr Turnbull and Minister Frydenburg,” he said.

Mr Giles also congratulated Senator Nigel Scullion on his reappointment as Minister for Indigenous Affairs.

“Senator Scullion has been a strong voice within Federal Cabinet for the strengthening of Indigenous economic rights and I’m confident his reappointment will allow him to continue to fight a good fight for the Territory and for Indigenous Territorians in particular,” Mr Giles said.
